President's News

Dear Woodbridge Music Club Members:

Just a reminder that we will have our first event for the Woodbridge Music Club next Sunday, October 1st, at our home - 6842 Lochmere Drive, Manassas, VA. This is a House Concert/Potluck, so please let me know by email if you want to perform, and let me know what you want to bring for the Potluck dinner. I especially want to welcome our new members and their spouses to this event. We hold several of these during the year, and its a great opportunity to meet other members of the Club, perform any pieces you are currently working on in a more informal setting, and find out what is going on this year in the Woodbridge Music Club. I am in the final stages of finishing the WMC Yearbook for this year, and hope to have it available for distribution at the House Concert/Potluck.

I also plan to hold a Board Meeting at our home on October 7, 10:00 AM, and I hope many of you will be able to attend so we can talk about our plans for this year and the out years, and also discuss ideas presented by the WMC Futures Committee.

Please make sure you have marked your calendars for for the Guest Artist Concert - the Polaris Piano Trio - on October 21st. Be sure to invite your students, friends, and family! This promises to be a wonderful concert and a great opportunity to enjoy good music performed by an outstanding group. A flier will be coming out shortly.

Don’t forget about the first student recital on November 4th. Applications for students performing are due to Grace Reid October 21st.

Looking forward to seeing you at the House Concert!

Emanuel Ax

Bill & Laura Riski, long time active members in the WMC moved to South Carolina earlier this summer. They finally have settled in a bit there and started to check out the local music scene. Last night Bill & Laura attended a concert by Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra featuring internationally acclaimed pianist Emanuel Ax. Wow!

While his full-time job is teaching on the faculty of The Juilliard School in NYC, Ax travels and performs - extensively. For instance, just between now and Christmas he has 28 performances spread across St. Louis, Philadelphia, London, Amsterdam, Stuttgart, Antwerp, Dortmund, Eindhoven, Paris, Budapest, Madrid, Cleveland, Zurich, Stockholm, and New York City.

If you have a chance, go see him perform.

Dear Committee Chairs:

I am counting on each of you to continue in your current chair positions for the coming year. I have filled several chair positions with that were vacated in the past year by the Riski’s departure from the area, however Bill Riski has generously offered to continue to manage our Webpage from his new location in SC. Debbie Madsen has agreed to function as the Communications Chair and has some great ideas on how to generate interest in some of our activities. The listing of committee chairs as it stand now is below. I am looking at the possibility of adding a chair position for National Music Week, and perhaps Founder’s Day - these will be fairly limited responsibilities and I plan to go out to other members to get them involved in our club. Here is the list as it stands right now:

WMC Board Mtg, April 21, 2017

Dear Woodbridge Music Club Members:

We held a WMC Board Meeting on Friday, April 21and had a fairly good turn out for the meeting with 12 members present. All of the officers were in attendance, and 13 committees were represented by the members present. I have attached the agenda we followed for the meeting, however we did discuss quite a few other items that were not reflected on the agenda. Our discussions on various topics were lengthy in some cases, but I believe we got a lot of issues out on the table and either made decisions or determined a way ahead to address many of the issues I mentioned in the email announcing the meeting.

Scholarship Competition, Mar 4

Dear Woodbridge Music Club Members:

The WMC Scholarship Competition is coming up March 4th (winners' recital March 5). If you have students who want to compete, please submit the appropriate WMC Scholarship Application Form (attached below) to the chairperson indicated for each competition. Please note that this year there is a separate Chairperson for each of the Piano, Instrumental, and Vocal competitions. The postmark deadline for all applications is February 11, 2017.

Historically, this has been a very successful program for students of our Woodbridge Music Club members. We have changed some of the eligibility requirements this year - primarily the requirement that all student competitors must study with a member of the Woodbridge Music Club. We have also established a new category of membership - Secondary School Associate Membership - which allows high school music teachers the opportunity to join our club and enter their students in the Scholarship Competitions and other programs offered by the National Federation of Music Clubs. Hopefully this will build the number of Instrumental and Voice participants in our Scholarship Competitions and increase opportunities for these Prince William County students to further their music education.

If you have any question concerning the Scholarship Competition, please contact the appropriate chairperson as indicated on the Application Forms:

Piano: Laura Riski
Instrumental: Zuill Bailey
Vocal: Debora Madsen

The application forms are available by clicking the category above.

Thank you in advance for your participation in this important Woodbridge Music Club event as we continue to encourage the young musicians in our area to reach for new levels of musical achievement.
